LAMENT FOR JUDY GARLAND
I saw a rainbow bleeding in the evening sky
Orange and red and indigo and blue
And a Gipsy wind crept sadly through the dying leaves
And all of this reminded me of you
And I wondered if you’d found what you were looking for
In that wonderland of which you used to sing
Where there’s no such thing as broken dreams or falling stars
Broken hearts and Bluebird’s broken wings.
Sanctified in celluloid you made your merry way
Not caring about what you did or said
Until at last you found fair-weather friends all slip away
As you struggled to survive the life you’d led.
Now insubstantial images are all that’s left of you
Canned memories of a younger better age
And fragmented half-forgotten songs have rung the curtain down
Like mocking laughter on an empty stage.
And I wonder did you find what you were looking for
In that wonderland of which you used to sing
Where there’s no such thing as broken dreams or falling stars
Broken hearts and Bluebird’s broken wings.
